The Journey
Rocafonda, 08304
Born on July 13, 2007 in Esplugues de Llobregat, raised in Rocafonda, a working-class neighbourhood of Mataro up the coast from Barcelona. His father Mounir is Moroccan, his mother Sheila is from Equatorial Guinea. The three fingers and the zero he makes after scoring spell out 304 — the tail of Rocafonda's postcode. He has never pretended the goal celebration means anything else.
La Masia, Age Seven
Barcelona took him in at seven. He moved through every age group without ever looking like the smallest story in the room, and on April 29, 2023, at 15 years and 290 days, he became the youngest player ever to make a La Liga appearance for the club. Most players spend their whole careers trying to get one of the records he had before he could drive.
Seventeen, and the Best Player in Germany
At Euro 2024 he was the youngest player at the tournament and, by the end of it, close to the best. The goal against France in the semi-final — struck from outside the box, curled into the far corner — made him the youngest scorer in the history of the European Championship. Spain won the final. He was 17 years old.
New York, and the Set Almost Complete
Two years later, days after turning 19, he started seven of Spain's eight matches at the 2026 World Cup and won every one of them. In the final against Argentina he took more shots, completed more dribbles and won more tackles than anybody on the pitch; Ferran Torres settled it in extra time. Yamal finished the tournament with 30 completed dribbles, more than any other player, and became the youngest human being ever to hold a World Cup and a European Championship at the same time.
The Cabinet at 19
FIFA World Cup 2026: champion. Seven starts, seven wins, most dribbles at the tournament.
UEFA Euro 2024: champion, and the youngest scorer the competition has ever had.
La Liga: back-to-back titles under Hansi Flick, the second sealed with a 2-0 win over Real Madrid on May 10, 2026 with three games to spare. Barcelona's 29th.
Not yet: a Champions League, and a Ballon d'Or. Those are the two the next few years are about.
Carrying the Ten
Barcelona gave him the number 10 for the 2025-26 season, at 18. It is the shirt of Maradona, Ronaldinho and Messi, and handing it to a teenager was either the most confident thing the club has done in a decade or the most reckless. A World Cup and a league title later, the question has largely stopped being asked.
For Spain he wears 19 — the number he had at Barcelona before the 10 came free.
Into the Leadership Group
In September 2026 Hansi Flick named Raphinha and Pedri as first and second captains. The squad then voted for the rest: Eric Garcia, Frenkie de Jong and Lamine Yamal. Being chosen by teammates rather than appointed by a manager is the part that matters — at 19, in a dressing room full of internationals, they picked him.
The Price of Being Him
A market value around 154 million euros, the highest in world football, and a level of attention that arrived when he was 16 and has not eased since. He went into the World Cup carrying a hamstring problem and started seven games anyway. The most interesting question about the next decade is not how good he gets. It is how long the body and the noise let him stay there.
